Decorating TIP: Massive Appeal
Overscale
furnture is one big deal on the design front. From armoires to armchairs,
bigger is better; and massive, if you can pull it off, is better yet.
Large-scale pieces such as four-poster beds, overstuffed chairs-and-a-half and
heirloom-style armoires add solidity, focus and structure to a room. The trick
is to balance larger, heavier pieces with lighter ones. Surround a huge table
with lighter wicker or iron chairs. Pair two plump love seats with the spare
lines of a carved wooden side chair. Balance a sofa and a chair-and-a-half with
a minimalist coffee table to leave a little more leg room. On heavier
upholstered pieces, use lighter fabrics to make the furniture seem buoyant.
Look for see-through items such as wire or trestle bookshelves, glass tabletops
and mesh doors on cabinetwork to lighten the load.
